The Gippsland Lakes, including Lake Tyers is the largest estuarine lake system in Australia, and is unsurpassed for all water sports – boating, yachting, sailboard riding, swimming, skiing and fishing.

RIVERS - The Tambo, Nicholson, and Mitchell Rivers provide some great bream fishing, and there are excellent boat ramps.

BEACHES - the 90 mile beach, just 20 minutes away at Lakes Entrance is wonderful for surfing, swimming, surf fishing or just to stroll along.

CYCLING - The famous East Gippsland Rail Trail goes from Bairnsdale to Orbost via Bruthen and Nowa Nowa – about 100km. Crosses hundred year old wooden trestle bridges.

LAKE CRUISES - available from Lakes Entrance and Paynesville. See the Lakes in style and enjoy a meal with local wine.

BOAT HIRE - runabouts can be hired from Bream Lodge (Johnsonville) or Lakes Entrance.

HISTORY - the homestead at Nyerimilang Park is worthy of a visit with its magnificent rose garden and lake views.

SHOPPING - For the shopaholic there are the towns of Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale (while there, don’t forget to check out the magnificent ceiling of St Mary’s Church).

NATIONAL PARKS – The area abounds with national parks including the Colquhuon Forest, Fairy Dell, and Glenaladale National Park for the bushwalking enthusiast, and for those who prefer the beach, there are the Ninety Mile Beach Marine Park and the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park.

FISHING – For the fisherman, the twin rivers of the Nicholson & Tambo feeding into Lake King offer excellent fishing for Black Bream and a variety of other species. There are excellent boat ramps at Nicholson & Johnsonville with ample capacity for parking cars and trailers. For those wishing to venture further afield, there are also a number of boat ramps at the western end of Lakes Entrance on the North Arm, and the Bullock Island sides of the Princes Highway.

FARMERS MARKETS – Every first Saturday of the month at the Bairnsdale Secondary College and every second Saturday of the month at the Metung Village Green. 8 am to midday. Bruthen’s market is every third Saturday.
